Due to scheduling difficulties, Firedoglake.com will NOT be showing Waste Land as stated in this article. I am very sorry for any misunderstanding.
“From the world’s largest trash dump comes an astonishingly true story of a renowned new York artist and a group of scavengers.” (WasteLand official trailer)
Firedoglake will be airing the Oscar-nominated documentary Waste Land, with the Director on as a guest, Monday, February 21, 2011. Look for “Monday at the Movies.” The start time is 5 PM, but you can tune in any time Monday evening without missing anything, a very nice feature of ‘Monday at the Movies.’
Firedoglake’s Billy Glad summarized the film in a comment that I will paste here, thank you Billy:
“In Brazil, “catadores” separate recyclables from garbage at Rio’s Jardim Gramacho, the biggest landfill in the world. In Brazil, instead of separating recyclables from garbage when they collect it, they intermingle everything, and the catadores, who live in shacks at the landfill, pull the recyclables out and sell them at the going rate. So, instead of getting their insulated copper from dumpsters, the catadores get it at the landfill. Waste Land is partly about the catadores trying to organize a commune to negotiate the price of the recyclables.”
I have not seen the film, but got some information from the trailer and the website. Vik Muniz, the artist, wants to make portraits out of the garbage and return the money from the sale of the portraits to the scavengers. An auction sale of “Pieces of garbage” is depicted in the trailer.
I believe that this inspiring film shows just what humanity is capable of. I cried openly watching the trailer because I feel that I have ‘been beating a drum.’ and will continue to do so.
